Spring Fun

We've been busy at the farm. Well... as busy as we ever get. Buddy and I laid chips on the entrance pathway. I'd dug it up a little, and it got real muddy. Now it's nice, and I tried to incline the slope such that the water will drain away from the gate.
Rick and Catherine have had excellent success with their attic seed-starting station. I love that it uses the waste heat from their house, rather than grow mats. Once the starts were well up, they brought them over to  put in the cold frame. This is actually a new unit, because after only 4 or 5 years of hard use, the first one wore out.
Here are the first few starts, looking so vigorous and strong. They are short, with big fat stems; just what you want.
And the tulips are blooming! They missed the snow by just a week.

Weather Note
We got the March rains all right! At least we've had storms in pulses, so we haven't had day upon day of rain. According to the local paper, we got 5.42 inches of rain this March. The creeks are running full, Lake Oroville is full, and hopefully, there's plenty of snow in the Sierras. Low temps are up into the high 40s, and the last frost date is usually mid April.

The sun finally came out. After a few days of rain, the sun is very welcome. And it's finally warmer.
The sun slipped below the clouds, and just lit up the trees.
It's hard to tell in this picture, but the hawk tree was spectactular.
This is such a classic spring shot: The trees are leafing out, the sky is cloudy, but the sun is pouring through.
On Sunday, Jane hosted an egg hunt party for her friend Kim and Kim's kids. Of course, we donated eggs, and Catherine made some really beautiful ones using stencils. (Egg pics will appear in a future post.) The took a field trip to the farm to look at the chickens while Titus hid the eggs.
They toured the farm and fed and petted the chickens.
Bill and Laura came over.
And Laura made this beautiful egg.
